Through these reports, we have further enriched communication with our stakeholdersand continually fulfilled our accountability. In line with a trend mainly in Europe to combine financial and non-financial information in a single integrated report, in 2014 weissued an Asahi Kasei Report replacing our Annual Report and CSR Report. At the same time, since then we disclose information onthe details of our CSR activities using this website. Since fiscal 2019, we have termed this report the “Sustainability Report” both on our website and in its downloadable form. In thereport, we present the Group’s approach to sustainability and contributions to achieving a sustainable society, in accordance withthe concept “Care for People, Care for Earth” presented in our Medium-term Management Initiative “Cs+ for Tomorrow 2021,”which was launched in fiscal 2019. The framework for our activities is organized into Environment (E), Society (S), and Governance(G), and comprehensive information is provided on policies, systems, activities, numerical data, etc.The primary focus is fiscal 2020 (April 2020 ‒ March 2021). There is increased awareness regarding life, health, andhygiene. New social issues have come to the forefront, and people’s values with respect to how they live and work have changed.Furthermore, the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which are considered to cause climate change, and the difficultyof doing so, have become even more apparent, and efforts to achieve carbon neutrality are gathering steam around the world. Thereis also an urgent need to address human rights issues, such as by correcting and preventing human rights violations that resultfrom business activities, including forced labor. The importance of taking action to achieve a sustainable society will only continueto rise.Asahi Kasei’s Group Mission is to contribute to life and living for people around the world. The expression “Care for People, Care forEarth” encapsulates our commitment. We will continue our efforts to contribute to a sustainable society and care for both peopleand the earth, which is now more vital than ever before.Regarding Care for People, we are advancing initiatives that contribute to achieving a society where people can lead active lives inthe “new normal” both during the pandemic and thereafter. When COVID-19 swept the world, we responded by increasingproduction of ventilators and material for protective medical gowns, while maintaining a stable supply and increasing the productionof bioprocess filters for the manufacture of vaccines and therapeutic agents. We are also advancing in the fields of pharmaceuticalsand medical devices for orthopedics and critical care to address the needs of aging populations around the world over the mediumto long term. We are also developing our Homes business which enables people to lead fulfilling lives in security and comfort overthe long term.Regarding Care for Earth, we are working to contribute to the achievement of a carbon-neutral sustainable society. In May 2021, weannounced our goal of becoming carbon neutral in our GHG emissions by 2050. Achieving carbon neutrality is a major challenge forus, having business operations centered around chemicals. However, we believe that our generation should shoulder theresponsibility of working towards this goal so that we can ensure a bright future for subsequent generations. At the same time, chemistry can make significant contributions to reducing global GHG emissions and making a sustainable society a reality. We willcreate new value for society through our technologies and products in the chemical-centric Material sector while offering ZEH (netzero energy houses) and high-performance thermal insulation in the Homes sector. In a discontinuous and uncertain business environment where the future is obscure, we need to firmly solidify our foundations aswe move forward. We will continue to take challenges of contributing to a sustainable society while ensuring compliance, safety andquality, and respect for human rights, as well as appropriate communication with stakeholders. We strive for two mutually reinforcingaspects of sustainability: “contributing to sustainable society” and “sustainable growth of corporate value.” By creatingvalue for “contributing to sustainable society” we seek to gain high earnings that lead to “sustainable growth of corporatevalue” which enables us to make further contributions in a virtuous cycle. In order to achieve this, we pursue the optimal corporate governance while practicing the following.Value creation through contribution to sustainable societyResolving issues for People and the Earth through our high value-added businesses (Care for People, Care for Earth)Leveraging our strengths of diversity and capability to change for the creation of value (Connect, Communication,Challenge)Responsible business activitiesComplying with laws/regulations and respecting international standards regarding business activities (Compliance)Prioritizing ESH (environment, safety, and health), human rights, and quality assurance throughout all of our activitiesPerforming appropriate information disclosure and dialogue with our stakeholdersEmpowerment of personnelRespecting diversity and inclusionEncouraging each employeeʼs growth, performance, and challenging spiritAsahi Kasei Group Sustainability Policy (131.4KB)Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 20218Our Group Mission is “contributing to life and living for people around the world,” and we have grown by continually contributing tosolutions for society. Our commitment has remained constant ever since our founding with the aim of improving peopleʼs standardof living. Today, discussions about achieving sustainability are taking place around the world. Since sustainability is a challenge thatconcerns people and the global environment, we believe that the pursuit of “living in health and comfort” and “harmony with thenatural environment” as set forth in our Group Vision will lead to sustainability. “Sustainable growth of corporate value” in conjunction with “contributing to sustainable society” is also important. “Contributing tosustainable society” leads to earnings which enhance the corporate value of the Asahi Kasei Group. To make this virtuous cycle a reality, we will strive to create value by contributing to a sustainable society, conduct our businessactivities in a responsible manner, and promote the empowerment of our employees. We will accomplish these goals through thefundamental “Cs” of Compliance, Communication, Challenge, and Connections together with “Care for People, Care for Earth” asexpressed in fiscal 2019 as part of our “Cs+ for Tomorrow 2021” three-year medium-term management initiative. Our ultimate aim is to continue to proactively contribute to the world as a leader in solving challenges for society, carrying on thecommitment we have had since the founding of our company.Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 20219Sustainability Vision – Asahi Kasei Groupʼs VisionSustainability Vision – Asahi Kasei Groupʼs VisionSustainability Vision – Asahi Kasei Groupʼs VisionSustainability Vision – Asahi Kasei Groupʼs VisionAsahi Kasei Groupʼs Approach to SustainabilityThe Direction of Sustainability with a View Toward 2050The Direction of Sustainability with a View Toward 2050In response to recent major changes in the environment, such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, Asahi Kaseiʼscommitment to “Care for People, Care for Earth” has become even more important. Given this context, Asahi Kasei will take on the following two challenges as we look toward 2050. From the perspective of “Care forEarth,” we aim to achieve a carbon-neutral and sustainable world, and from the perspective of “Care for People,” we aim to achieveactive life in the new normal. As we look ahead to 2050, it is predicted that we will be confronted with a variety of social issues. We believe that we will be able tohelp resolve these issues and that our business opportunities will expand. For example, in terms of “Care for Earth” (achieving a carbon-neutral and sustainable world), we can contribute to importantthemes such as electric vehicles, a hydrogen-based society, carbon recycling, and achieving a circular economy. We will do thisprimarily through our businesses in the Material sector, such as recycling technologies, CO2 separation and recovery, an alkalinewater electrolysis system, and battery materials.Note: To achieve a carbon-neutral world, it is essential to reduce GHG emissions from our business activities. For more information on the AsahiKasei Groupʼs policy toward carbon neutrality, please click hereIn terms of “Care for People” (achieving active life in the new normal), we will contribute to the development of homes andcommunities that can withstand storm and flood damage and extreme heat. We will also contribute through our health carebusiness to help people live healthy and vibrant lives.Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202110In addition to aiming to provide value to society through our two challenges, we will enhance the fundamental activities that supportour business activities, such as corporate governance, compliance, respect for human rights, and safety and quality. We will alsopursue our two sustainability goals of contributing to a sustainable society and gaining sustainable growth of corporate value.Asahi Kasei Groupʼs MaterialityInitiatives for Achieving a Carbon-neutral and Sustainable WorldGreen hydrogen production technology using an alkaline water electrolysis systemHydrogen, which is attracting attention as a fuel for automobiles and as a means of storing and transporting energy, is a key factorfor carbon neutrality. Based on our knowledge of chlor-alkali electrolysis systems, we launched the worldʼs largest alkaline waterelectrolysis system in Namie Town, Fukushima Prefecture in 2020, and began an efficient hydrogen supply operation usingrenewable energy. As expectations for hydrogen rise worldwide, with various countries in Europe announcing hydrogen strategies,we are also conducting demonstrations in Germany. We aim to commercialize this technology as one of our priority technologieswhile leveraging our strengths.Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202111CO2 ChemistryWe are also focusing on CO2 chemistry, which enables the production of chemical products using CO2 as a raw material. In the area of polycarbonate production technology, the EC process has been used in practical applications and is being licensedaround the world. The DRC process, which is a further refinement of the EC process, has already been demonstrated as viable andis attracting attention as a technology that enables production regardless of the location of petrochemical plants. We are alsodeveloping a technology to produce isocyanate (raw material for polyurethane) from CO2. We have also started to use the ECprocess as a basis for the production of electrolyte materials for LIBs, which will become even more essential in society goingforward. With regard to CO2 separation and recovery, we are developing a system that uses our catalyst technology to efficientlyseparate and recover CO2 from power plant and factory exhaust gas using special zeolites (a type of mineral) with a preciselycontrolled pore structure.Achieving Active Life in the New NormalSafe, Comfortable, and Resilient Homes and CommunitiesEarthquakes, fires, and the climate change-amplified risk of wind and flood damage are just some of the threats to peopleʼs livesand livelihoods. Being able to live safely in a home that is prepared for these threats is an essential prerequisite for leading avibrant life. The Hebel Haus™ offered by Asahi Kasei Homes features a solid frame that can withstand earthquakes and powerfultyphoons, as well as high-performance heat insulation that shuts out sweltering heat. It can also be equipped with an independentenergy supply system that provides peace of mind if the power grid is disrupted due to a natural disaster. We will also contribute to improving the resilience of community development. In Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, we are working with theward to help make the densely crowded wooden homes in some neighborhoods fireproof. Moreover, to prepare for disasters, we aretaking three steps to attain complete resilience: protecting lives, protecting health, and restoring lifestyles. We have equippedhomes with seismographs to quickly gather data on earthquakes. We are currently working with the National Research Institute forEarth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) to develop a system that will enable us to estimate the areas likely to sustain themost damage so that recovery operations can start as soon as possible.Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202112Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202113Sustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementManagement FrameworkMateriality and SDGsInitiatives and MemberOrganizations WeParticipate InRelationships withStakeholdersManagement FrameworkThe Asahi Kasei Group considers sustainability to be an important focus of management and incorporates it into both its medium-term and annual management plans, in addition to discussing it at Board of Directors meetings. We have also established aSustainability Committee to promote sustainability group-wide. The Sustainability Committee consists of the President, Executive Officers for Business Sectors, the Executive Officer forTechnology Functions, and the Executive Officer for Business Management Functions, and is responsible for disseminatinginformation, formulating sustainability-related policies, and so on. The Sustainability Committee coordinates with the RiskManagement & Compliance Committee and the Responsible Care Committee, which handle more technical and specific matters. All three of these committees are chaired by the President of Asahi Kasei. Our Global Environment Committee, chaired by theExecutive Officer for Technology Functions, holds specialized discussions on global environmental measures as a subcommittee ofthe Sustainability Committee.Framework for Sustainability Strategy (as of September 1, 2021)Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202114Message from the Senior General Manager, Sustainability Strategy PlanningDepartment”Sustainability” has become a commonly used term in recent years. It was only two years ago that we established ourSustainability Strategy Planning Department. Since then, however, there have been a lot of developments, and”sustainability” seems to have become an everyday term. That being said, I believe that what is important is not that theterm has become commonplace, but that we are now at the beginning of a long road in which we will implement full-scaleinitiatives toward sustainability. We have adopted a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, and are also promoting a number of initiatives anticipating a circulareconomy. We are taking on challenges for achieving active life in the “new normal” of the COVID-19 pandemic. Asimportant issues that form the basis of these initiatives, we are also striving to address human rights, compliance, safety, quality, and relationships with local communities. Collaboration and cooperation with people outside the company are also essential to advancing these initiatives. We willstrive to provide value for a sustainable society through earnest dialogue with our stakeholders regarding what is expectedby society.Tatsuhiko Tokunaga Asahi Kasei Corp.Senior Managing Executive and Senior General Manager of the Sustainability Strategy Planning Department Asahi Kasei Group Sustainability Report 202115Sustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementSustainability ManagementManagement FrameworkMateriality and SDGsInitiatives and MemberOrganizations WeParticipate InRelationships withStakeholdersAsahi Kasei Group effort for the SDGsThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.
